A: Hi, I’m Angelina Neglia and I’m here with Scott MacDonald, author of Saving Investa, How an Ex-Factory Worker Helped Save an Iconic Australian Company. In the book, Scott shares 25 lessons learned over his long and impressive career.
Lesson seventeen is: Whenever you are invited to perform on a bigger stage, you must take advantage and demonstrate that opportunity and your capability. Scott, how often do people get such opportunities?
S: Angie, some people seem to have a lot of opportunities while others seem to get one in their whole career. So, the key is to take advantage of each opportunity because you may not get more. The real key is to exceed expectations. So if you’re invited to deliver a presentation before the investment committee or make a presentation before the big boss, just understand that going to the presentation, giving them a report, and leaving is not… It’s missing the advantage. It’s not taking advantage. What you need to do is exceed expectations. Do something above and beyond what one would normally do. They will remember this, and you will be given opportunities to perform on bigger stages as your career evolves.
